I had a really great weekend alone with my wife in downtown Calgary this weekend. The kids got dropped of with nana and papa and we headed downtown for 48 hours of rare alone time. Besides the great company we were able to eat some great food, check out the sites and do a little shopping.

Our first night we ate at the Rose Garden Thai restaurant on Stephen avenue. It was quiet, quaint and the food was deliciously authentic. The next "morning" we took in the brunch at Thomson's restaurant. It was so tasty that we slowly grazed over it for a little over two hours.

We spent the afternoon walking through the shops on 8th avenue. We were especially impressed with some artwork by Nevada Christianson at one of the galleries in Art Central. Saturday evening we we went to Char|Cut on a recommendation. It wasn't in our normal range of food, but we greatly enjoyed the cured meats, rotisserie items and various things fried in animal fat. The poutine made with duck fat fries and truffle gravy were especially decadent.

Sunday morning we woke up late and then drove to Inglewood. Surprisingly, it was my first time there after 13 years of marriage to a former Calgarian. We had breakfast at Eat! Eat!, which was delicious and then spent time looking through the ecclectic mix of shops. We browsed through everything from Chinese antique furniture, to army surplus, to fun junk and even imported hand made Japanese knives (they even let me try them on some vegetables). Before heading back home we stopped at Choklat to by some amazing locally made chocolate, which we were told will be making it's way to Edmonton soon.

Thanks for the great weekend Calgary. Maybe you're not so bad afterall ;0)
